Nadja Jänisch is a naturopath specializing in osteopathy, a trainer, and a nutritionist. At her practice, OsteoFIT, located in the Park-Hotel Hagenbeck, she combines therapeutic work with exercise, training, and personalized counseling.

“Longevity is on everyone’s lips. But do we really have to reinvent everything to achieve it? Many of the topics that are grouped under this term today have long been part of my daily work.

Exercise, strength, a balanced diet, good sleep, recovery, and being mindful of one’s own body—these are not new concepts. But they are and will remain the key factors when it comes not only to living as long as possible, but also to spending as many of those years as possible in good health, staying active, and maintaining independence.

And that’s exactly what I like about this topic: It focuses not only on how old we get, but above all on how we age.”

Move Our bodies want to be used

For me, physical activity is one of the most important foundations for feeling good as we age. It’s not about completing a perfect workout routine every day. Everyday movement, endurance, strength, and mobility complement one another.

Maintaining muscle strength, in particular, becomes increasingly important as we age—it’s a key pillar of our independence. At the same time, endurance boosts our resilience, and flexibility helps us stay as agile as possible in our daily lives.

My approach, therefore, is this: not to do as much as possible, but to exercise regularly and in a way that suits your own body. What feels good and is doable has the best chance of becoming a lasting habit.

Supply What Our Bodies Need Every Day

Nutrition is also one of the fundamentals. A varied, nutrient-rich diet with sufficient protein and fluids provides a good foundation. I consider extreme approaches or short-term diets unnecessary for most people.

I think the more important question is: What fits my daily life, my age, my activity level, and my individual needs? There’s no single “right” diet for everyone. And enjoying your food should definitely be part of it.

Regenerate Good health also requires breaks

Exercise and physical activity are important. But our bodies also need time to recover. For me, sleep, relaxation, and effective stress management are just as much a part of a health-conscious lifestyle as exercise.

This could be a leisurely walk, mindful breathing, a soothing massage, or a moment when you don’t have to accomplish anything. Regeneration isn’t the opposite of activity. The two go hand in hand, and everyone finds their own rhythm here.

Understand Getting to Know Your Body Better

This topic is particularly close to my heart because it makes up a large part of my daily work. People come to me with all kinds of questions: Why does a movement suddenly feel different? What might be causing a limitation? What can I do to change things myself?

There isn’t a simple answer to every question—and certainly not one that applies to everyone. But understanding your own body better, recognizing how things are connected, and knowing what options you have can make a big difference.

In my work, I therefore combine—depending on the issue at hand—therapeutic approaches with movement, exercise, and counseling. It’s not about constantly controlling or optimizing the body. Rather, it’s about developing a healthy, self-determined relationship with it. What feels beneficial to one person might already be too much for another. Figuring that out is the exciting part.

Life Health Should Be a Joy

With all the advice out there about health and longevity, there’s one thing we shouldn’t forget:

We don’t just want to keep functioning for a long time—we want to live! Meeting friends, eating together, traveling, laughing, staying active, remaining curious, trying new things. For me, all of that is part of a fulfilling life.

Health, therefore, shouldn’t become just another project to optimize. Perhaps that’s precisely one of the most important ideas behind longevity: finding habits that are good for us, that we’d like to maintain in the long term, while at the same time remaining open to new things. Without pressure, without perfectionism.

So what does longevity mean in everyday life?

Healthy aging doesn’t necessarily require the latest technology, a complicated biohacking program, or a perfectly scheduled daily routine. The basics are surprisingly down-to-earth: exercising regularly, taking good care of your body, giving it time to recover, understanding it better—and not forgetting to enjoy life along the way.

And perhaps longevity begins right there: with a walk, a workout, a good meal, a restful night’s sleep, a new experience, or simply the decision to consciously take time for yourself and your body. After all, we can’t determine how old we’ll get. But we can do a lot to shape the years leading up to that point.
